
Snapshots of Victorian Life is an innovative educational performance for school groups investigating different aspects of Victorian life.
Classes are divided into two groups, each with an actor in role. The actor portrays 5 different Victorian characters helping the children to discover the different kinds of people and the problems they faced in the Stroud Valleys in the Victorian era.
Each group reports back to the rest of the class relating important events for the characters they have encountered to build a snapshot of life in Victorian times.
The characters the class meet reflect a wide range of lifestyles, occupations, social classes, attitudes and opinions. They are based on real people and events from the time and include:

Smallpox outbreak in the area and the need for vaccination |

The Great Exhibition and the invention of the lawn mower |

Handloom Weaver - 1839 |
Working conditions for weavers in the Stroud valley |

Policeman - 1839 |
Formation of the police force and the need for law and order |

Temperance Society - 1879 |
The need for laws to curb drinking and try to get drinkers to "sign the pledge" |

British School Teacher - 1839 |
Difference in teaching methods adopted by Victorian schools |

National School Teacher - 1870 |
The Education Act to ensure all children attend school and proper etiquette for girls |
The session lasts for 90 minutes.
Session times 10.30 - 12.00 or 1.00 - 2.30
