family portrait: paul's Story

A one day performance-centred training event focusing on young people who sexually abuse

Download Leaflet
Paul's Story centres on a young person who has sexually assaulted his sister.
Throughout the day, Paul reveals his own personal story. It is this story that the worker is ultimately trying to reach to help them to gain a better understanding of Paul's situation.

Practical workshops form part of the training event. Course participants are not required to perform role play. They will help and advise on ways to overcome difficulties.

Created in consultation with Dr. Arnon Benotvim (London Child and Family Consultation Service) and Peter Thomason (author of Focused Work with Sexually Abusive Adolescents), Paul's Story  is written by John Bassett, who has trained professionals in the U.K. and abroad, on the subject of young people who sexually abuse.

Course participants will increase their knowledge and awareness of:
  • how sexual abuse impacts of families and young people
  • the young person's experiences as victim and perpetrator
  • what makes an effective/realistic treatment programme
  • important aspects of work with the family
  • fears for both the young person and the worker
  • how workers can overcome blocks to help the young person engage

Whilst the central focus of Paul's Story is sexual abuse, it also explores:

  • the impact for a young person witnessing domestic violence
  • the young person as victim of both sexual and physical abuse
  • coping strategies adopted by families in these situations
  • why young people who sexually abuse are not "sex offenders"

"This intense, dynamic and thought provoking course is relevant to all professionals who work with families, children and young people."
Worker - Bexley Women's Aid
