Picture
This innovative educational performance allows school groups to investigate different aspects of Victorian life in the Stroud district.

Classes are divided into two groups (boys and girls), each with an actor in role. Each actor portrays 5 different Victorian characters helping the children to discover the different kinds of people and the problems they faced living in the Stroud Valleys in the Victorian era.

The characters are based on real people and events from the time and include:

Nurse - 1893 Smallpox outbreak in the area and the need for vaccination

Engineer - 1851 The Great Exhibition and the invention of the lawn mower

Handloom Weaver - 1839 Working conditions for weavers in the Stroud Valley

Policeman - 1839 Formation of the police force and the need for law and order

Temperance Society - 1879 The need for laws to curb drinking and try to get drinkers to "sign the pledge"

British School Teacher - 1839 Difference in teaching methods adopted by Victorian schools

Suitable for ages 7 and above
