Family portrait: Mary's story

A one day performance-based training event for anyone who works
with victims, families and
perpetrators of domestic violence

Download Leaflet
Mary's Story follows on from Paul's Story and focuses exclusively on domestic violence issues.

It is not necessary for course participants to have seen Paul's Story. Mary's Story is designed as a stand alone course.

Practical workshops form part of the training event. Course participants are not required to perform role play. They will help and advise on ways to overcome difficulties.

Mary's Story was created in consultation with workers from Bexley Women's Aid, Gloucestershire Domestic Violence Support and Advocacy Project, Probation Service and other agencies concerned with domestic violence. It is written by John Bassett, who has trained professionals in the U.K. and abroad, on the subject of young people who sexually abuse, and is based on case studies and current research.

Course participants will increase their knowledge and awareness of:
  • how domestic violence impacts on families and young people
  • the woman's experiences and emotions as a victim
  • what makes an effective/realistic programme of work
  • how to work effectively with the family
  • important aspects of working with a perpetrator
  • fears for the family and the worker
  • the effects witnessing domestic violence can have on a young person

The day will be divided into three sections focusing on working with: the victim - the family - the perpetrator

These sections will explore
  • the myths surrounding domestic violence
  • the effects on the family
  • coping strategies adopted by families in these situations
"A once in a life time experience but an experience that will influence your life!"
